The Slacker that I am

Today is my one-week anniversary of not running. I do plan to remedy that on my lunch break however. I can give all the excuses that I had on hand like being just toobusy, having to run a ton of errands after work, needing to spend time with my husband, blah, blah, blah. But I know deep down in my heart that I was just being lazy. And I just can't wrap my brain around it! I had the best run last Thursday. I ran for 2 miles straight, and my body felt GREAT! (a little rhyming action there for your entertainment) Why didn't I want to get up on Saturday morning and go straight into a run? Well, I gave myself the excuse that I didn't want to overwork my already spent body, but I didn't feel one bit weary; and then Sunday is our "resting" day, so it was naps all around after church with Lost: Season 1 on the tv, and then this week's lunch hours have been filled with running to the fabric stores to get supplies for new orders on my etsy site.

I hope my body hasn't too quickly forgotten what it feels like to move quickly.

159-lb Sack of Potatoes

At least that's what I felt like when I started running today. I just thought to my self, "Really?? But I felt so good just two days ago doing this exact same thing!" The sack of potatoes thing soon wore off, but not as soon as I would have liked. It took about 22 minutes of my 33-minute workout to be exact! I know it has something to do with my legs that are still sore from my run two days ago, and then the rest of my body that is simply screaming out in protest because it has no idea what I'm doing.

I just can't believe that I have allowed myself to get this heavy in such a short amount of time. I felt a huge change in my body this summer, which also just happened to coincide with my 30th birthday. I always thought that the things my mom used to say about how much your body changes as you get older and how much harder it is to lose weight when you get older was jibberish. Little did I know that 30 would be my magic number. I was no longer able to simply cut back on my eating and fit in some "good" things here and there to lose 5-lb. And then I realized that I had become completely sedentary since I got married. I no longer lived downtown just one block away from the 2.5-mile canal walk that used to by my daily running/walking track. I no longer had to walk 2-3 flights of stairs to get to my apartment. I now had a house with a sewing room where I usually sit on my butt and work on projects when I get home from work.

I know for a lot of people 159 lbs. would not be considered "heavy," but for my 5'2" height, it has almost bumped me into the "obese" category. Just for fun, I also figured out my BMI today: 29.1 (30 is considered obese). This change is coming exactly at the right time!!

I have decided that my weight-loss goal is 125 lbs. Now, I don't know if this is even an achievable goal for my body, but I'm willing to try. I was almost there about 10 years ago when I ran 25 miles a day, but I don't know if I even owned a scale then. I just measured my body by how I felt when I was running and how my clothes fit. I'm excited about being in that place again.

Sore, but it's a good sore

I managed to get a 33 minute (2.6 mile) interval training in yesterday after beginning my personal challenge of training for a mini marathon and kicking my butt back into shape! The interval training is one I read about years ago in Runner's World during my former running days. It consists of intervals of walking (3 min.) and running (6 min.) to best work out your stride. It's also great for litty miss fatty here to comfortably get back into training without completely pulling every muscle in my legs. I'm sore today, but it really feels good. I was sweating after the workout, thus, I felt like I accomplished at least a little bit of something. I also managed to do the entire 33 minutes on an incline of 2 - 2.5. I just simply can't stay at the minimum incline because I feel like I'm running downhill the whole time. I was tempted at some intervals of my running to just keep running because I get so impatient when I'm walking, but I had to keep reminding myself that even though my endurance is good considering I haven't really worked out in over a year, my body is not ready for extensive running - even 12 straight minutes of it.

Regardless of how satisfying the run was after the fact, the beginning was not the best. As soon as my running interval began, I was shocked to feel the extra heavy jiggling on my bottom and hips. I didn't remember ever feeling that before! I can't wait to run that junk off! By the end of my run, my bottom was numb, and I couldn't feel any of the excess....probably a good thing.

I forgot to mention that I am trying to eat better as well. As we all know, the holidays tend to do a large number on us, and I am definitely not the exception. As I stated yesterday, I am at my heaviest, and it is time to start being conscience of what I'm putting in my body. The hubby and I made a stop at Sam's and loaded up on tons of fruits and vegetables. I spent a good part of Saturday prepping the fruit for a yummy fruit salad, cutting up veggies for our healthy and fresh salad (thank you Salad Spinner!) and prepping two HUGE packages of carrots for our juicer. We both love to start the day with a large carrot/apple/cucumber juice. Having everything ready to go makes such a difference when I want to use the juicer.

I plan to take a day off between runs to let my body recoup...but I just get so impatient. We'll see...

Woa, Mama!

The scales tipped in at 159.5 yesterday evening (yes, I know that you should NEVER weigh yourself after you have put two meals into your body, but it was convenient for me), and I realized that this was the HEAVIEST I have been since spending a summer in Germany eating ice cream everyday and butter on everything! This has GOT TO STOP! I have come to the conclusion that my blog may be my best form of accountability for losing weight.

I have tried the Weight Watchers thing, but I just cannot stand the meetings. Maybe this is from years of attending WW and I'm just over it. I have heard all the tips and trials and tribulations a million times already. (This is what happens if you have been trying the program since you were 8 years old!) The last time I attended a meeting, I sat through a discussion about what to do when your child leaves the bag of oreos out on the counter after helping themselves. Ooooo....temptation....what to do? These people sat and discussed for fifteen minutes about how difficult this type of situation was since most of them just wanted to tear the bag to pieces and devour every crumb. Eventually, I raised my hand and suggested that if they REALLY wanted to eat the Oreos and they had enough points for their day, why not just take the allotted serving size, register their points in their daily count, and ENJOY the oreos?! I mean, come on! You're not going to get anywhere in this world by completly stressing out about a bag of Oreos sitting on your kitchen counter. Well...the WW leader didn't think that my suggestion was the most conducive to the her point, and I simply received a cursory nod. Oh well...enough of those meetings.

Since I have allowed my body to go to complete waste this past year (2009), I am jumping on the proverbial bandwagon and committing to changing the way my body works! About ten years ago, I was a running MANIAC. I don't really think you can be a true "runner" without being fanatical. There is just something about the high and satisfaction you receive from running a long distance that you can't get from anything else. Scott and I talked about joining a gym with the start of 2010, but I think I'm going to try my hand at running again. I stopped running originally when I injured my knee during a run when I thought a dog was ripping across his yard and eat me (thankfully, he was chained up...a deceivingly LONG chain, but chained up nonetheless). It hasn't been the same since. However, I am willing to give it the old college try! My best friend just spent her 31st birthday running a marathon in Vegas. She started running early in 2009 with the goal of running the Indy Mini-Marathon, and she just kept on going. It was her urging me to run a marathon in April with her that has encouraged me to put the running shoes back on. I don't think I'm going to be able to run a marathon by April considering the fact that I can barely run a mile without stopping, but I think the Indy Mini is definitely a good goal. And we'll see how that goes...I've done it twice, I can do it again.

My goal through this blog is to achieve my maximum physical body along with considerable weight loss. For those of you who are runners or who have ever had any commitment to running, you understand that there is no better way to tone your body completely all over. Every part of your body is affected and improved by running. I plan to keep a weekly tally of my body weight, measurements and miles logged from the previous week. So here we go!

Weight: 159.5 lbs. (weighed in at 11:55 a.m., 1/3/2010)
Measurements:
Bust: 40.5"
Waist: 38"
Hips: 44"

I'll keep you posted. I'm off for my first jog of the new year!
